Composition of the soundtrack
with its own character
By deciding to accompany this story with an original film score composed specifically for it, I took on another major challenge. Organizing a dedicated orchestra ensemble for this purpose was obviously not an option, both for time and financial reasons. Instead, I decided to produce the music entirely digitally using software. For this, I chose the Opus Edition by EastWest – a virtual Hollywood orchestra with a high-quality and extensive instrument library that is perfectly tailored to my needs.
The music was intended to accompany my images in a way that allows the viewer to feel like a part of the creative process. From the very beginning, it was clear to me that this project would not become a traditional documentary. Instead, it is meant to immerse the audience in the world of model aircraft construction through impressive and atmospheric images. The viewer is placed at the center of the action, while the model builder’s hands work around them.
On the one hand, I had to familiarize myself with the then still unfamiliar world of music production. Through self-study, I learned how the software works and the principles behind it. On the other hand, it was necessary to develop a solid understanding of how an orchestra is structured and how it functions musically.
As a filmmaker, I am used to working with images. These are created either during production in front of the camera or later in the editing process on the timeline. In music production, this process works differently: At the beginning, there is nothing more than an empty timeline. Therefore, I first had to consider which melody should carry this story, which timbres would support the images, and what it should sound like to build a PC-24 model aircraft.
The music should feel epic and powerful, while at the same time remaining sensitive and nuanced in certain passages. It should draw the viewer directly into this world. The greatest challenge was to develop a central theme for the entire ensemble that carries this 22-minute story – varied, captivating, and fitting for each individual chapter.
